Section 3.1 Student Expectations
Students should devote a minimum of 2-3 hours of study time to the course for every fifty minutes of in-class time (8-12 hours per week). It is especially recommended for a two-day per week course that students devote at least 1 hour of study time to the course each weeknight. Additionally, students are expected to be actively reading the course text and attempting homework problems while each section is being covered (not after). Lastly, any student with non-academic obligations (e.g. part-time employment) is strongly encouraged to pay close attention to their course standing throughout the semester, so as to not fall behind in their studies.
This course relies heavily on many of the concepts introduced in a General Mathematics course. It is therefore essential that students resolve any prerequisite course material concerns as soon as possible. In particular, unless enrolled in a co-requisite lab, it is assumed that all students are proficient in algebra skills including the following: operations with real numbers (whole numbers, integers, fractions, and decimals), operations with polynomials such as factoring, simplifying expressions using the laws of exponents, simplifying radicals, and solving linear equations. Students seeking additional support in meeting the necessary mathematical background requirements to the course should contact the professor, who can suggest additional resources.
